| Purpose |
Six representatives from Syngenta visited NSRL to exchange
information with UIUC scientists on soybean breeding and crop protection
chemicals. Syngenta is the newly formed company that represents the
merger of Astra/Zeneca and Novartis. Three representatives were from
Syngenta Seeds and three were from Syngenta Crop Protection. Presentations
were made on soybean breeding activities at Syngenta Seeds and at UIUC
as well as Crop Protection research at Syngenta Crop Protection. Dr.
Terry Niblack, UIUC Nematologist, discussed the new HG type system for
SCN with the visiting Syngenta breeders. Interested graduate students
and post-docs met with Syngenta personnel to discuss jobs in industry. Over
20 UIUC Dept. of Crop Sciences and NSRL personnel joined the Syngenta visitors
for the presentations and ensuing discussion. |

| Purpose |
Mr. Jun Kamiya of the Produce Department of the Foods Division
of Mitsui, USA visited NSRL to learn about the Laboratory's involvement
in the Soybean Value Chain including production, use in animal feed, and
identity preservation. He had special interest in the latter given
the strict rules that Japan has for importing soybeans and soy products
into that country. |

(8) Leading Soybean Growers from the midwestern and southern soybean growing
regions |
| Purpose |
REAP (Regional Education and Awareness Program) is an annual
program of the American Soybean Association. This year, the 4-day
tour is being hosted by the Illinois Soybean Association and includes soybean
farmers and leaders from Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Missouri, Arkansas,
Oklahoma, Iowa, and Illinois. The goal of the tour is to educate
these leaders about soybean research and production facilities in Illinois
so that they can become educated advocates for these programs and facilities.
The group, including personnel from ASA and Bayer Corporation (sponsor)
,listened to presentations on NSRL, consumer acceptance of soy in their
diet, the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH), and the Illinois
Soy Foods Center. The group also visited the SoyFACE research site
and were given a tour of the plot area. The visit concluded with
a soy-enriched luncheon at NSRL. |

| Purpose |
Twenty-four students from Taiwan and
the Dominican Republic visited NSRL to learn more about
soybeans and their use in animal and human nutrition.
The students are taking summer classes at Millikin University
in Decatur, IL in Agribusiness and Illinois Culture.
The Taiwanese students were all from Tunghai University
in Taichung City, sister school with Millikin.
The group leader of the students was Linda Traub. |

Tom Kurth, President of Urethane Soy Systems (USS), Princeton,
IL, visited NSRL to tell us about his soybean-based urethane products and
to learn more about potential soybean varieties that could benefit his
business by providing more of certain components. These components
(especially linolentic acid and linoleic acid) are important to USS because
higher levels can greatly improve the process chemistry that goes into
the production of their products. Mr. Kurth was accompanied by Sharon
Covert, Board Member of the Illinois Soybean Program Operating Board (ISPOB)

A group of four European non-GMO soybean buyers visited
NSRL as part of a week-long soybean buyers tour in Illinois. The
group was interested in current soybean research that is being done at
the University of Illinois. They were particularly interested in
research on identity preserved systems, the utilization of soy for human
consumption, soy as animal feed, and GMO vs non-GMO issues. |

| Purpose |
This subcommittee is comprised of growers
from Vermillion County, Indiana, and Purdue University
Cooperative Extension personnel. The subcommittee
is charged with finding agricultural uses for the Newport
Army Depot, 7000 acres of land and buildings near Newport,
IN, , that will released from Army control in approx.
4 years. They visited NSRL to learn more about
our activities in using soy in human and animal nutrition
and in the soybean marketing chain. The committee
also has an interest in using a portion of the site
as a joint agricultural research station between Purdue
University and the University of Illinois. |
