Feed Utilization
Soy/Swine Nutrition Research Program (Soy/Swine)
Principal Investigators: Jim Pettigrew (University of Illinois)
Principal Contact: Marilyn
Nash
This managed research program coordinates activities by swine nutritionists,
meat scientists, and agricultural economists who work together to discover
ways soybean meal can be better used by pigs. By optimizing the nutrition
available from the soybean meal in swine diets it is hoped that U.S.
soybean meal will
remain the ideal protein source for swine feeding.

Niche Market Opportunities in Animal Feeding for Small Farmers with Soybeans
Principal Investigators: George Fahey and Neal
Merchen (University of Illinois)
Principal Contact: Marilyn
Nash
Soybean meal quality is greatly influenced by processing conditions yet the effects
of processing conditions on the concentration and availability of
meal nutrients is not well defined. This project brings together
animal scientists, agricultural economists, and soybean industry
specialists to examine whether species-specific soybean meal would
provide new market opportunities for soybean farmers and optimal
feed formulations for swine producers.
Soy in Animal Nutrition Database (SAND)
Principal Investigators: George Fahey and Jim
Pettigrew (University of Illinois)
Principal Contact: Marilyn
Nash
SAND is a product of research being done by the "Soy/Swine"
team and the "Niche Market Opportunities in Animal Feeding"
group. One of the results of nutrition work done within these
projects has been extensive nutrient digestibility studies and
soybean and meal component analyses. This site offers digestibility
databases for soybean meal from international and domestic sources,
and for beans and meal processed under various controlled processing
conditions.
